Uninsured Driver Claims – the Motor Insurance Bureau

If the vehicle can be traced the MIB will make enquiries to establish if there is any insurance on the vehicle. They will generally appoint an agent who will investigate matters on their behalf and as part of that process may need to speak to you and any of the witnesses to discuss the accident circumstances and take a full statement. The following criteria must be met however before a claim can be submitted:

  • The accident must be reported to the police as soon as possible (within 14 days). The police should provide you with a reference number to evidence the fact that you have reported the accident.
  • The accident must have been the responsibility of the uninsured/untraced vehicle.
  • You should have visited a hospital or your GP as soon as possible so that an official record has been made of your injuries.
  • Claims for compensation must be made within certain time limits. Cases must be brought within three years from the date of the accident or injury.
